School Mathematics begins in our lives as a string of digits, symbols and tables. Within a few years of starting school, it moves fast towards problem solving, connections, communication, and representations of abstract and real life events, giving us tools to operate in a world of opportunities. Everywhere you look - patterns, shapes, sequences, relationships and beautiful mysteries appear alive with energy and meaning. And yet, in our disadvantaged schools in South Africa, there continues to be a glaring deficit of performance. FACTS: Out of 1,222,851 learners who entered school at Grade 1 in 2013: : 44 636 passed Pure Maths at levels 5,6,7 and 31 345 passed Physical Science at these high
